About This Tool
Edit PDF fills supported existing AcroForm fields and adds text or visual marks over the original PDF pages. Fillable forms expose their actual controls; flat forms use positioned overlays, so the original artwork, page dimensions, rotation, order, and alignment remain the document base.
What You Can Do
Detected form fields
Fill supported text and multiline fields, checkboxes, radio groups, and dropdowns while viewing the original page.
Text and visual overlays
Add text, a date, checkmark, cross, rectangle, image, or drawn/uploaded visual signature, then adjust its placement and appearance.
Page-aware editing
Keep edits attached to their page while navigating a multi-page document or changing editor zoom.
Editable or flattened output
Keep supported form fields editable by default, or choose to flatten their filled appearances into the downloaded PDF.
Original-page export
Save field values and new overlays into a separate PDF without rebuilding the original page as paragraphs or images.

Practical Use Cases
Application forms
Enter information into a supported fillable application without moving the surrounding labels or form artwork.
Scanned forms
Place typed answers, dates, and checkmarks over blank lines on a flat scan while retaining the original page.
Document completion
Draw or upload a permitted visual signature, or add initials to an acknowledgement that does not require certificate-backed signing.
Privacy and File Processing
The PDF, form answers, overlay text, and visual-signature images are processed in browser memory. They are not uploaded by this workflow, included in lifecycle analytics, or autosaved to localStorage or server storage. Leaving or resetting the editor discards unsaved edits.
Supported Inputs and Outputs
Input
- Unencrypted PDF with supported AcroForm fields
- Flat or scanned PDF
- PNG/JPEG overlay or visual-signature image
- Drawn visual signature
Output
- Edited PDF with original pages and added content
- PDF with supported fields kept editable or flattened
Quality and Fidelity
The original PDF pages remain the base. Supported field values and new overlay objects are written without reflowing source paragraphs, changing page dimensions, or rasterizing complete pages. The editor is for filling and overlay editing, not arbitrary modification of existing static text.
Limitations and Important Notes
- Existing static PDF text is part of the page content and cannot be directly rewritten by this editor; new text is an overlay, not a replacement of the underlying text.
- Dynamic XFA forms and unsupported field types are not editable here. Complex or unusual form appearances should be checked in a standard PDF reader.
- Encrypted or password-protected PDFs must be unlocked separately before editing, and corrupt documents may fail to open.
- Editing normally invalidates existing cryptographic digital signatures. A drawn or uploaded signature image is a visual mark and does not create a digital certificate signature.
- Added text uses standard PDF fonts with Latin character support; arbitrary Unicode scripts, custom fonts, and complex text shaping are not supported.
- The local editor has a 25 MB input limit and depends on available browser memory. Flattening makes filled form values no longer editable as form fields.
- Covering content with a shape does not securely redact or remove the underlying content. Use a dedicated redaction workflow for sensitive information.
Worked Example
Open a three-page synthetic registration form. Fill its detected name field and checkbox on page one, add a date above a printed line on page three, and review both pages at Fit Width. Download the edited copy and reopen it to confirm the two sets of edits remain on their intended pages without changing the source page dimensions.
Helpful Tips
- Use an existing detected field when one is available instead of covering it with a text overlay.
- Keep short answers within the printed form area; adjust font size and review long text before export.
- Use a transparent PNG for a visual signature when a white image background would obscure the signature line.
- Keep a separate original copy and download your work before navigating away; sensitive edits are not autosaved.
- Check the saved PDF in the reader or submission system that will receive it, especially when retaining editable fields.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I edit existing text already printed in a PDF?
Existing static PDF text is part of the page content and is not directly editable here. You can fill detected form fields or add text and other elements on top of the original page. The editor does not extract and rebuild the document.
How can I tell a fillable form from a flat form?
A supported AcroForm contains real field objects that the editor detects and presents as controls. A flat or scanned form may look similar but contains no such fields; use overlays in its blank answer areas.
Which form fields can I fill?
Supported text and multiline fields, checkboxes, radio groups, and dropdowns can be edited. Unsupported field types and dynamic XFA forms are disclosed instead of being presented as working controls.
Will the downloaded form remain editable?
Keep fields editable is the default for supported form fields. The flatten option writes their filled appearance into the page, removing their interactive field behavior. Added overlays become page content in either mode.
Will text move when I zoom or download?
Overlay positions are stored in PDF page coordinates rather than screen pixels. Zoom changes the on-screen scale; the export uses the same page positions and preserves original page sizes and rotation.
How do I add a checkmark or date to a flat form?
Choose the Check or Date tool and place the new mark on the intended page. Move it into position and adjust the text or size as needed. For a detected checkbox, use its actual form control.
Is a drawn or uploaded signature a digital signature?
No. It is an image placed on the PDF as a visible signature appearance. It does not prove identity, create a certificate, or preserve an existing cryptographic signature after the document is edited.
Are my document and answers stored or sent to analytics?
PDF bytes, entered form values, added text, and signature images remain in the local editor memory. This workflow does not autosave them to localStorage or a server, and they are not included in tool lifecycle analytics. Download your work before leaving the editor.
Can I edit an encrypted PDF?
Unlock the document separately with its authorized password, then load the decrypted copy. Edit PDF does not silently bypass encryption.
Can I type in any language?
The current export uses standard PDF fonts and supports their Latin character repertoire. Arbitrary Unicode scripts and complex shaping are not supported; unsupported characters must be corrected before export.
