About This Tool
Universal Image Converter detects image bytes before decoding, validates dimensions and memory limits, and re-encodes pixels locally into an output format that is genuinely available. It does not treat a filename extension as proof of format support.
What You Can Do
Signature-based detection
Recognize verified container or image signatures and disclose extension or MIME mismatches.
Dynamic output choices
Offer only different output formats backed by encoders that are available in the current browser.
Transparent-pixel control
Preserve alpha for PNG, WebP, TIFF, and ICO, or require a visible background choice for JPEG, BMP, and this single-frame GIF encoder.
Bounded specialist decoders
Read uncompressed 24/32-bit BMP, baseline uncompressed RGB/RGBA TIFF, PNG-compressed ICO/CUR entries, and restricted self-contained SVG without loading a full codec suite.
Real downloadable output
Validate the destination signature, display actual dimensions and byte size, and download the encoded result.
How to Use
- 1
Choose one image up to 50 MB; the converter inspects its bytes, then validates the decoder and decoded pixel dimensions

- 2
Review detected format, dimensions, file size, transparency, and any first-frame, first-page, or browser-codec limitation

Practical Use Cases
Web delivery
Create JPEG or WebP copies of supported still images while keeping original dimensions.
Transparent assets
Convert supported pixels to PNG, WebP, TIFF, or a square ICO output when alpha must remain available.
Legacy interchange
Open verified uncompressed BMP or baseline TIFF images and create a common browser format.
Format inspection
Identify a file whose extension or supplied MIME type does not match its actual image signature.
Privacy and File Processing
The selected image bytes, filename, metadata, decoded pixels, preview, and result remain in browser memory for this workflow. They are not uploaded, placed in analytics, or persisted by the converter. Only generic tool lifecycle statuses and a generic completed-image history label are used.
Supported Inputs and Outputs
Input
- JPEG / JPG / JFIF
- PNG (first frame with explicit confirmation when APNG animation is detected)
- WebP (first frame with explicit confirmation when animation is detected)
- GIF (first frame with explicit confirmation when animated)
- BMP (uncompressed 24-bit or 32-bit)
- TIFF / TIF (baseline, uncompressed interleaved 8-bit RGB/RGBA; first page only)
- ICO / CUR (PNG-compressed entries; largest supported entry)
- SVG (restricted self-contained static subset)
- AVIF (only after successful validation by the current browser decoder)
Output
- JPEG
- PNG
- WebP when the current browser encoder returns a valid WebP signature
- Single-frame GIF
- 24-bit BMP
- Uncompressed 8-bit RGBA TIFF
- Single-size PNG-compressed ICO (16–256 px)
Quality and Fidelity
The tool decodes visible pixels within bounded browser memory, applies orientation where the active native decoder or TIFF orientation tag supports it, then re-encodes those pixels. JPEG and WebP quality are lossy controls; PNG, BMP, TIFF, ICO, and single-frame GIF use their implemented fixed encoding paths. It does not promise preservation of animation, layers, vectors, source bit depth, metadata, or perfect ICC-managed color.
Limitations and Important Notes
- HEIC/HEIF is recognized but is not advertised as supported because this build has no fixture-verified browser decoder. No embedded thumbnail is presented as full HEIC conversion.
- Camera RAW formats including CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, RAF, ORF, RW2, PEF, and DNG are recognized but not decoded; no demosaic, sensor color interpretation, or thumbnail-only shortcut is claimed.
- PSD/PSB, EXR/HDR, JPEG 2000, JPEG XL, PNM/PAM, TGA, bare DIB, PCX, XBM/XPM, WBMP, PCD, DDS, FITS, SGI, SUN/RAS, SVGZ, and legacy DIB-style ICO entries are not decoded by this build.
- Animation is not preserved. Animated GIF and detected animated WebP/APNG input require explicit first-frame confirmation.
- Multi-page TIFF exports only its first page after explicit confirmation. ICO/CUR selects the largest supported PNG-compressed entry; ICO output contains one selected square size rather than a multi-size family.
- SVG input is restricted to a safe static element and attribute subset. Scripts, external or data URLs, document entities, embedded documents, style blocks, event handlers, animation, and unsupported elements are rejected.
- Conversion keeps source dimensions except for explicit square ICO output. The 50 MB compressed-file, 8,192 pixel per side, and 25 megapixel decoded-image limits protect browser memory.
- The converter re-encodes pixels and cannot preserve EXIF, GPS, ICC profiles, comments, original bit depth, RAW sensor data, layers, vectors, or source compression. Color rendering uses the current browser and canvas conversion behavior.
- Lossy JPEG or WebP output can reduce detail. BMP and single-frame GIF do not preserve alpha in this workflow, so transparent pixels use the selected background.
Worked Example
A PNG file renamed photo.jpg is detected from its PNG signature. The converter reports the extension mismatch, preserves its original pixel dimensions, lets the user choose JPEG, explains that transparent pixels need a background if alpha is present, and produces a JPEG whose signature and measured size are validated before download.
Helpful Tips
- Keep the original file because conversion removes source metadata and may change compression or color interpretation.
- Choose PNG or TIFF for a lossless alpha-capable result; use JPEG or WebP quality controls for smaller photographic output.
- Inspect fine gradients, text, transparent edges, and brand colors in the downloaded result at full size.
- Use Resize Image separately when you want to change normal image dimensions rather than just the encoding format.
- Do not rename extensions to change format; let the converter create bytes for the real destination format.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which inputs are actually supported?
Fixture-backed inputs are JPEG/JPG/JFIF, PNG, WebP, GIF, uncompressed 24/32-bit BMP, baseline uncompressed RGB/RGBA TIFF, PNG-compressed ICO/CUR, a restricted static SVG subset, and AVIF only when the current browser validates and decodes the file. Recognized formats without a verified decoder are reported as unsupported.
Can it convert HEIC or HEIF?
Not in this build. HEIC/HEIF is detected, but there is no fixture-verified local HEIF decoder, so the tool returns an explicit unsupported message instead of uploading the image or extracting a low-quality thumbnail.
Can it convert camera RAW or Photoshop files?
No. RAW files require demosaic and camera color interpretation, while PSD/PSB composite decoding requires a separate verified codec. These formats are recognized but not advertised as supported.
What happens to an animated GIF?
The decoder detects multiple GIF frames and requires you to confirm first-frame-only conversion. This tool does not claim to preserve animation; use GIF Frame Extractor when separate composed frames are needed.
What happens to transparency?
PNG, WebP, TIFF, and ICO outputs retain the decoded alpha channel. JPEG, BMP, and this GIF output path require transparent pixels to be filled with white, black, or a chosen color.
Does conversion preserve metadata?
No. The browser decodes visible pixels and the destination encoder creates a new file, so EXIF, GPS, ICC profiles, comments, and other source metadata are removed. A misleading preserve toggle is not shown.
Why was my SVG rejected?
The local SVG rasterizer accepts only a restricted self-contained static subset. It rejects scripts, event handlers, style blocks, entities, embedded documents, external or data URLs, animation, and unsupported elements to avoid executing uploaded markup.
Does conversion resize images?
Normal outputs keep the decoded source width and height. ICO is the deliberate exception because you choose one square icon size between 16 and 256 pixels.
Where is my image processed?
The bytes and decoded pixels remain in the browser workflow. Image bytes, filenames, metadata, and pixels are not sent to analytics; only the existing generic lifecycle status events are recorded.
