JPG, PNG or WebP: choosing an image format

Choose an image format by transparency, detail and destination support rather than assuming one extension is always smallest.

Start with the receiving system

A technically efficient format is not useful if the destination refuses it. Check the accepted formats and maximum dimensions before converting. Retain the original as a master so a delivery copy is not the only remaining version.

A camera photograph, transparent badge and text screenshot need different tradeoffs. Compare the actual exported file in the destination rather than relying on its suffix.

What the format changes

JPEG is commonly used for photographs and uses lossy compression; it cannot carry alpha transparency. PNG uses lossless compression and supports transparency, which is useful for logos and sharp graphics. WebP can support lossy or lossless encoding and transparency, but a particular tool may expose only some of those capabilities.

An image converter must actually encode the selected format. Renaming picture.png to picture.jpg leaves the underlying bytes unchanged. GXA Image Converter detects available encoders and does not promise every format on every browser.

Test a transparent badge and a photo separately

For a transparent badge, compare an alpha-capable output against contrasting backgrounds; a JPEG version needs an explicit solid background. Examine the edges, not just the center. For a photograph, compare file sizes and visible detail at the intended display size.

Do not generalize the winning photo setting to every screenshot. Text can reveal compression artifacts long before a photograph looks visibly different.

Keep the encoding decision separate from dimensions

A 4000-pixel image may be excessive for a small card regardless of its format. Resize to an appropriate size first, then choose delivery quality. Increasing quality cannot recreate detail lost by a previous resize or lossy export.

Animation and metadata are separate concerns. Check whether the specific converter preserves them; static preview success is not proof of animation or metadata preservation.
