Resize an image without stretching it
Use aspect ratio to distinguish proportional resizing from cropping, and work through common square-image requirements.

Shape is the relationship between dimensions
A 2400 × 1600 picture has a width-to-height ratio of 3:2. Changing width to 1200 while retaining that ratio gives a height of 800. Changing it instead to 1200 × 1200 stretches its contents into a different shape.
Faces and circles make distortion easy to notice. Other subjects can be stretched without an obvious warning, so use the dimensions rather than visual guesswork.
Resize, crop or add space?
Proportional resizing preserves the whole composition at a different pixel size. Cropping discards parts of the composition to change its boundary. Adding surrounding space is another design choice, but it is not the same as stretching.
When a site requires a square portrait, crop a square around the intended subject, then resize to the requested pixels. Do not unlock the aspect ratio merely to make two fields match a requirement.
Follow a landscape-to-square workflow
Start with a 2400 × 1600 landscape photograph. A square crop can retain up to 1600 × 1600 source pixels, depending on the chosen framing. Export that crop and resize it to 800 × 800 for the destination.
This removes side content rather than distorting it. Check that essential labels or people are not outside the selected square before you commit to the delivery copy.
Upscaling does not recreate source detail
The browser interpolates pixels when enlarging. A larger output can be required by a form, but it does not turn a low-detail source into a newly captured high-resolution photograph.
Keep resizing separate from byte-size compression. After dimensions are correct, compare suitable encoding options if a delivery limit still applies.
